Meals
Atawhai Kids provides nutritious food for both morning and afternoon tea times. This consists of sandwiches or toast, porridge, fruit and vegetable platters, and/or crackers with hummus. We sometimes provide baking, such as pikelets, muffins and scones.
Please ensure you communicate with staff any dietary restrictions or allergies your child may have.
Families are required to provide lunch for their child. We have a fridge for chilled food, and microwave to heat food.
Children are encouraged to recognise the importance of consuming the food provided in their lunchbox and will be supported to understand how a variety of different foods fuels their bodies.
Clothing / Toileting
Please provide a named bag for your child, which contains at least two labelled complete changes of clothes.
As we encourage outdoor play for children in all (except extreme) weather conditions, please ensure that your child has ample provision of weather-appropriate clothing. Rain jackets and gumboots (or other water-resistant footwear) are encouraged on wet days. In summer, we often allow water-play for the children. You may wish to provide a pair of swimming togs and towel on warmer summer days to minimise wet clothing.
Children at all stages of toileting are welcome at Atawhai Kids Preschool. We provide disposable nappies, wipes, and balm (if required) for all children who wear nappies. If you prefer to provide your own cloth or disposable nappies, please ensure this is communicated to staff and that an ample supply is provided for the duration of your child’s time at the centre.
Transitioning out of nappies is an exciting milestone in children’s development. We encourage parents and whānau of children due to enter this stage to talk with the teaching team about how we can assist a smooth transition, working in conjunction with processes happening at home. For these children, a toileting plan will be created to ensure consistent and predictable practices are followed. Any wet or soiled clothing will be bagged separately for collection at pick up time. Please ensure that enough spare changes of clothing are provided to allow for toileting accidents.
Sleep facilities
We believe in maintaining children’s natural sleep rhythms, maintaining consistency with their sleep routine at home. Comfortable and hygienic sleeping facilities are available for children of all ages as required, in a separate sleep room. Children will be accompanied by a teacher they are familiar with as they settle and fall asleep. We believe that sleep should be viewed by children as a welcome and relaxing part of their daily routine, and hence children will be comforted and reassured as they prepare for sleep.
Excursions
At Atawhai Kids, we strive to offer an exciting and stimulating physical environment. However, we also value the richness of learning that can be achieved outside of the preschool fences; hence regular outings are a core part of our program. We take regular walks to our local parks and organise excursions to events and other facilities within the Nelson community. We also arrange for visitors to come and perform for /speak to our children on various topics of interest.
